Concerned About Your Own Drug or Alcohol Use?

Are you concerned about your own drug or alcohol use? Deciding whether you have a problem can be challenging. You may or may not need rehabilitation treatment or “rehab.” Here are 5 ways to help evaluate where you are and figure out what steps you can take toward a healthier future.

1. Recognize early signs if your alcohol use is becoming a problem. Take the Alcohol Screener to find out if alcohol is harming your health or if you should cut down on your drinking.

2. Make an appointment with your doctor, therapist, social worker or other health professional to discuss your drinking or drug use.

3. Attend a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), SMART Recovery or other anonymous self-help groups devoted to helping members get sober and stay that way. It’s easy to find meetings near you at the convenient times – check the website listings for schedules. There are meetings all over and you can even sit in the back and just listen if you’d like.

4. For more information and support, speak to one of our trained specialists at our Parents Toll-Free Helpline at 1-855-DRUGFREE.

5. To find a treatment program in your area, use the SAMHSA’s Substance Abuse Treatment Locator.

When the going gets tough, remember you can do it – you can give up alcohol and/or drugs. Talk to someone. Talk to anyone in your life who can give you encouragement, support or practical help, such as family or friends – the people who love you and want to help you in any way they can. You might be surprised at how supportive they can be. If you feel like no one understands and you have no one to talk to about this, please know that there are others who have been there and understand and people who can help. Remember, you don’t have to be alone in this.

Have faith in yourself and you will find a way. It takes courage and responsibility to be happy. It’s not easy, but it is possible to recover and lead a healthy life, and we know you can do it.
